Darwin could only guess what might be causes of variation. He wrote,

Variation due to sexual recombination.
Through a multi-step process, DNA genes are transcribed into RNA molecules, which are translated into proteins. By alternate splicing of RNA, a single gene can code for many different related proteins, introducing another source of abundant variation between individuals.
