“… the intimate relation of Life with laws of chemical combination, & the universality of latter render spontaneous generation not improbable”. - C.Darwin excerpt from private notebook 1837

But if (& oh what a big if) we could conceive in some warm little pond with all sorts of ammonia & phosphoric salts,—light, heat, electricity &c present, that a protein compound was chemically formed, ready to undergo still more complex changes, …” - C.Darwin Letter to J.D. Hooker, February 1, 1871

What You Think It Does.

Darwin could only guess what might be causes of variation. He wrote,

"I am strongly inclined to suspect that the most frequent cause of variability may be attributed to the male and female reproductive elements having been affected prior to the act of conception." -C.Darwin,  On the Origin of Species. Page 8 - (1859)

Genetic Variation from Sexual Reproduction and Recombination

Variation due to sexual recombination.
Through a multi-step process, DNA genes are transcribed into RNA molecules, which are translated into proteins. By alternate splicing of RNA, a single gene can code for many different related proteins, introducing another source of abundant variation between individuals.

Variation due to mutations (genetic spelling errors.)

"One general law, leading to the advancement of all organic beings, namely, multiply, vary, let the strongest live and the weakest die," -C. Darwin Origin of Species, (1859),
P. 244

"I have called this principle, by which each slight variation, if useful, is preserved, by the term Natural Selection, in order to mark its relation to man's power of selection."
- C.Darwin On the Origin of Species (1859) P45

REALITY CHECK

"Therefore I should infer from analogy that probably all the organic beings which have ever lived on this earth have descended from some one primordial form, into which life was first breathed." - Origin of Species: first British edition (1859), P.484

"
But if (and oh what a big if) we could conceive in some warm little pond with all sorts of ammonia and phosphoric salts, - light, heat, electricity &c. present, that a protein compound was chemically formed, ready to undergo still more complex changes, at the present day such matter wd be instantly devoured, or absorbed, which would not have been the case before living creatures were formed.
- C.Darwin Letter to
J. Hooker, Feb 1, 1871
