Animal and hominoid bones, possibly mistaken for a cadaver when originally discovered, presumably by Muslim nomads, were artificially arranged and aligned with Mecca, mirroring Islamic tradition, then buried in sand. (The region became Islamisized in the 11th Century A.D.). Subsequent desert winds uncovered the remains, which were rediscovered July 19, 2001 by Alain Beauvilain, then Coordinator of the Palaeonotological Activities in the Republic of Chad.
Bottom line: the 'Toumai' skull of Sahelanthropus tchadensis was not found in situ. The skull's discoverer concludes, "The analysis of the surrounding sediment cannot thus be used as a means of dating."
