what are mutations?
Merriam-Webster definition
Hereditary Material Change: A relatively permanent change in hereditary material involving either a physical change in chromosomal relations or a biochemical change in the codons that make up genes.
Most but not all mutations are genetic spelling errors, and are believed to occur at random. However, in recent years a growing number of examples has been shown that some mutations are pre-programmed responses to environmental changes, anticipated, detected, monitored, and logistically countered by living organisms.
Random mutations are almost always at least slightly deleterious. However, living systems are characteristically so robust, that most random mutations have little impact, and though slightly deleterious are considered nearly neutral.
