WHAT DARWIN THOUGHT
"For, as has often been remarked, probably no two individuals are identically the same. All wild animals recognize each other, which shows that there is some difference between them,…” Variation in Domesticated Plants and Animals, Vol II, Chapter 12, P.1,2
“When a new peculiarity first appears, we can never predict whether it will be inherited.” Variation in Domesticated Plants and Animals, Vol II, Chapter 27, P.17
Darwin could only guess what might be causes of variation. He wrote,
"I am strongly inclined to suspect that the most frequent cause of variability may be attributed to the male and female reproductive elements having been affected prior to the act of conception."
C.Darwin, On the Origin of Species.(1859) P.8

NOTE: It is important to distinguish between the data of observational science and speculative conclusions driven by poorly supported hypotheses.
